ELSS and Section 80C: lock-in and tax considerations

30 July 2026·5 min read·Krushnakant Thakor, ARN-171718

ELSS may qualify for a Section 80C deduction under the old tax regime, subject to eligibility and current law. Each investment carries a three-year lock-in and market risk.

Under the old tax regime, eligible taxpayers may claim Section 80C deductions within the overall statutory limit. Tax outcomes vary by regime, income and current law; consult a tax professional.

  • PPF — 15-year term, government-backed, fixed interest.
  • Tax-saving fixed deposits — 5-year lock-in, interest fully taxable.
  • National Savings Certificate — 5-year lock-in.
  • ELSS mutual funds — 3-year lock-in, equity exposure, no guaranteed return.

Why the lock-in period matters

Each ELSS investment, including each SIP instalment, has its own three-year lock-in. Compare the restrictions and risks of all available options.

The trade-off is real: ELSS invests mainly in equities, so the value can be lower at the end of three years than when you started. Treat ELSS as a long-term equity holding that happens to give you a tax break, not as a three-year deposit.

A practical approach

You can compare eligible Section 80C products and account for existing contributions before deciding whether an ELSS investment is relevant. An ELSS SIP spreads purchases over time, but does not remove market risk. Each instalment has its own three-year lock-in.
